Start a Wine Journal Today!

by Jesse Frederick
Have you ever drank a glass of wine, found you really enjoyed it, gone on about your business, and then – days or even weeks later – find a bumbling thought catch your mind’s attention – a thought about that splendid glass of wine you enjoyed in recent history. You remember that it complemented your taste buds quite well, it really had a nice texture, and aesthetically it was sterling. But, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t remember one important thing (which, believe it or not, happens to be the most important thing). What’s the name of the wine!

Well, you’re not alone. I’ve done this very same thing several times, and would beat my head against the wall continuously thereafter in an effort to jar that elusive wine name from the irretrievable crevices of my brain to my conscious memory. Most of the time, however, the brain-bashing interrogation method didn’t work. I was forced to admit defeat. As Yoda would say, the name of that perfect wine, I remembered not.

A “girlfriend” (she was a girl, and my friend, but at that time, not my girlfriend as the term means today) of mine (who eventually became my wife) introduced me to a cure for this forgetful disease. She recommended starting a wine journal. Ingenious! (Albeit, one of the reasons I married this gal was because she had a knack for ingenuity). Anyway, it was a great idea, and did cure my ailment.

So, what’s a “wine journal” and how do you keep one? Well, it is actually quite simple. You can use a simple notebook, or even purchase a ready-made wine journal at a wine shop.

If you chose the former (and cheaper) route, then you should continue reading. If not, read the instructions that came with the wine journal, you cheater!

Okay, so you have a blank notebook. Let’s make a wine journal. It’s simple. Keep a wine journal just like you would keep a personal journal, only catalog wine, not events from your life. Say you’re at a nice wine party, and happen to drink a really fine glass of wine. Swallow any inhibitions you may have and be bold and brave – ask the host or hostess if you can have the wine bottle. They may give you a funny look or roll their eyes or call you a nerd, but if they really know their stuff, they’ll respect you for it.

Okay, you have the wine bottle. Fill your kitchen sink with hot water, and throw the wine bottle in. Relax. Come back in an hour or so and see if the paper label is loose. Warm water should really help it to separate from the bottle without too much of a fuss. So, now you have the wine label of one of your personally best tasting wines. Glue or tape it into your journal, and write next to it about your experience with it. How did it look? What was its aroma? How did it taste initially? What was the aftertaste like? Most importantly, explain why you personally enjoyed it so much as to place it into your coveted “Hall of Wine” book.

So start your wine journal today! Otherwise, prepare for more headaches as you try to beat your brain into memorable submission.
