Southern Wine Region in Argentina

Río Negro

This is the southest vinicultural region in Argentine, and, also, it is the one located at the lowest altitude. It extends over certain areas of La Pampa, Neuquén and Río Negro; mainly along the Río Negro and Colorado shores. Days are warm and shinny, and nights are fresh; and the media thermal amplitude is appreciable. The extension of warm periods makes it possible to crop first season and early varieties. From the edaphic point of view, the region presents medium and coarse textured, alluvial and colluvial soils that are apt to crop vine. Contrary to what happens in other regions of the country, vitiviniculture remains as a secondary activity in the economy of this region and vine cropping has decreased in the last few years.
It is possible to distinguish several different sub-areas in this region.

Rio Negro Valley (Alto Valle del Río Negro)

It takes up over the 80 % of the vinicultural surface of the region. This valley extends from Chichinales to Confluencia, over the shores of the lower courses of the Limay and Neuquén rivers. This productive area includes the counties of General Roca in Río Negro, and Confluencia in Neuquén. This is the most important vinicultural area in the Southern Region. Due to its weather conditions, this sub-area is propitious for viniculture.
