Wine decantation

To decant wine use large glass or crystal bottles called decanters. The objective of decantation is to seperate sediments found in specific guard wines or unfiltered wines. If you only wish to oxygenate a wine (with no sediments) this procedure is called pour off.

How to observe a wine

The wine is observed tilting the glass at 45° against a white surface. The features to be taken into account are the gleam, transparence, colour, tints, and glints. The colour of white wine is a pale or greenish yellow reaching an intense gold with the passing of time. Glints are to be seen at the lower end of the bowl in white wines, and at the upper end in reds. Red wines range from bold red colours to orange-like or brownish colours after a period of time. When turning the glass, the drops which run along its walls are named tears or legs.
